Michael Baumgartner


Michael Baumgartner is Director Collection and Art at the Zentrum Paul Klee. He wrote his dissertation on the early works of Swiss artist Dieter Roth. From 2001 to 2005 he was part of the task force for the development of the Zentrum Paul Klee with architect Renzo Piano and spearheaded the setup of the Department of Collections, Exhibitions and Research. He is furthermore responsible for the authentication of Paul Klee’s works and the implementation of art historical and art technological research projects. He is the author of the seminal monograph Paul Klee. Life and Work and editor and author of numerous publications in relation to exhibitions he has curated: Paul Klee. Melodie und Rhythmus (2006), In Paul Klee’s Enchanted Garden (2008), Franz Marc – Paul Klee. Dialog in Bildern (2010), Klee and CoBrA – Child’s Play (2011), Paul Klee, August Macke, Louis Moilliet: The Journey to Tunisia 1914 (2014), Klee & Kandinsky (2015). With his team he is currently working on the exhibition Paul Klee and the Surrealists in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou.
