Adrian Piper (*1948 in New York) is an American conceptual artist and philosopher. She lives in Berlin.
After obtaining a degree in painting and sculpture, Piper worked as a painter in New York. With her artistic work she has introduced new issues into the conceptual art such as racism, xenophobia and self and gender constructions and was the first to combine minimalism with explicitly political contents.
In 1981 she completed her Ph.D. in philosophy at Harvard University under John Rawls. Her sixth retrospective exhibition Adrian Piper since 1965, supported by the Generali Foundation was opened in 2002 and was on tour in Europe until 2004.
