EXPERIMENTS IN POP: TOWARDS A NEW VERNACULAR

Publication 2006

Publication 2006

The publication documents the first Sommerakademie at the Zentrum Paul Klee, curated by Diedrich Diederichsen, Laura Hoptman and Marina Warner around the theme Experiments in Pop: Towards a New Vernacular.
The contributions and works explore the localization of vernacular and popular culture in contemporary art. The last few years have shown that contemporary artists increasingly employ formal elements taken from popular and folk culture. The conditions, which led to the emergence and distribution of this kind of artistic practice are analysed and discussed in this publication. The exhibition accompanying the academy – The New Vernacular: Contemporary Art Meets Popular Culture – during which the participating artists presented their position, is discussed in this volume and short biographies introduce the Fellows, Speakers and Guest Curators.
