Justin Joshua Davy (1987, Cape Town) is an artist and curator based in Cape Town, South Africa. He holds a Bachelors degree in fine art from the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and an honors degree in curatorship from the University of Cape Town (UCT). He works both as a solo artist and as part of the collective Burning Museum, to which he has devoted most of his energies recently, on the overlapping themes of the archive and the contested legacies of colonial history. In this regard he has exhibited both locally and abroad, most recently at the Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo in Madrid as part of the exhibition Boundary Objects. Davy’s personal practice often engages with imposed regimes in the making of identity, often employing performance to unravel everyday (neo)-colonial and religious experiences. He has contributed to the collective using these perspectives. Davy's curatorial practice has resulted in exhibitions such as The Three Abdullahs and PLAKKERS which deal with Cape Town Muslim identity and the politics of gentrification in Cape Town respectively. He curated an exhibition at Greatmore Studios entitled #theopening which acknowledged the recent openings made in the political arena by current South African student movements but also brought this discourse into direct conversation with visual artists who have been exploring similar discourses through their practice.
